How We Met

Chuck and Amy like to think they were fated to meet. Typical of life in DC, they could have met through various combinations of friends. As it happened, they met on May 8, 2004 at a party thrown by a friend of Chuck’s from graduate school and Amy’s from her book club.

It almost didn’t happen--after driving around for 30 minutes in search of parking and nearly giving up, Chuck resourcefully parked in a friend’s space that happened to be vacant, conscientiously leaving a note for her to call when she got home, and headed for the party. Amy, who lived around the corner, ambled over to the party with a bottle of wine she had recently brought back from Argentina.

After drinking much of the bottle (hey, it was good wine!), she made her way upstairs. Chuck saw Amy across the crowded landing and said, "now that's someone I'd like to meet." He soon introduced himself and they talked for nearly an hour as if no one else were in the room. Chuck had to make a speedy exit when his friend rang to say she had returned and needed to park, but phone numbers and a clumsy hug were exchanged.

Three days later, they had their first date: a forum on public diplomacy at the ever romantic Center for Strategic and International Studies, followed by a stroll up 18 th Street toward Adams Morgan on a lovely spring evening, and dinner at Amy’s favorite neighborhood Ethiopian restaurant. (For those of you wondering, yes, they kissed on the first date).

How We Got Engaged

Chuck and Amy were engaged in Laguna Beach, CA, a place that has long held a special place in the hearts of the Szymanski family. Chuck and Amy were staying with Chuck's parents at the house they (and his grandparents before them) rent every year. One afternoon, Chuck and Amy took a walk on the beach and started doing some rock-climbing. They found a suitable giant rock upon which to perch above the crashing waves and take in the amazing ocean view.

Amy started to get chilly, but Chuck requested they rest another few minutes during which time he worked up his courage and asked Amy to marry him. She said yes! A few hours later, they celebrated with Chuck’s mom and dad, Betsy and Stan, and a bottle of champagne. They celebrated by phone with Amy’s mom and dad, Marilyn and Ron, who were equally excited by the news.
